Welcome back!!  I hope to make it a fun and exciting year for your child.  We will begin our first few days with some favorite back to school read alouds like First Grade Jitters , The Pigeon Has to go to School, and Clark the Shark.  They will allow to us to discuss some topics to get to know each other and to help us establish some routines and expectations.  Additionally, the students will be able to experience situations that require respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, trustworthiness, and citizenship during our daily morning meetings.  These themes will also be reinforced as we begin our first social studies unit.

 

The first graders will be learning routines and expectations for both writing and reading workshops.  In writing, the we will begin with our personal narrative unit, and in reading, we will introduce beginning reading skills.  Our class will learn how to “study words” and identify sounds, spelling patterns, vowels, and consonants within those words in our first phonics unit.

 

In Math, the children will learn how to show numbers using numerals, pictures, number words, or tally marks.  The students will have the opportunity to record, transfer and interpret data using tally charts.  They will compare numbers using the vocabulary words: more, fewer, in between, greater, less, before, after, etc.  Counting and beginning addition strategies will be introduced, and students will begin to become familiar with various math tools.
